We believe that we can make the new Sony Building into an even more appealing place by turning it into a hub for disseminating new information, providing real hands-on experiences for visitors to enjoy, and turning Ginza into a more intimate town.
The Sony Building was completed in 1966. In the design of the Sony Building, this idea of providing a public space has been present since the very beginning, in the form of the Sony Square. We will take this idea to another level with the Ginza Sony Park Project, in time for 2020, when new crowds and energy are expected to hit the streets of Ginza. Following this, a new Sony Building will be built, slated for completion in 2022. The entire building will be an extension of the Ginza Sony Park, in the sense that it too will be designed around the idea of being open and inviting to the public. We hope that both the Ginza Sony Park and the new Sony Building will come to be places that everyone can enjoy in Ginza.
From the summer of 2018 to 2020, the lot where the Sony Building currently stands will be used as a "park," in the sense that it will be very open and public in nature. There are very few parks in Ginza, and creating a park-like public space in a prime location right near the Sukiyabashi Crossroad is itself a revolutionary idea, one that we believe is a deeply meaningful, significant undertaking. Moreover, the below-ground space, designed as a "lower park," will house experiment-like facilities and labs where visitors can experience in-person the passion and new energy that drive Sony.
This Ginza Sony Park Project will reach its final form when the new Sony Building is completed in 2022. Even in the form of a building, though, the space will retain its primary concept of being a "park." The current Sony Building was fresh and innovative for its time, with Mr. Ashihara's "flower petal" structural design that was based on the concept of "going for a vertical stroll in Ginza" and which enabled the design of seamless exhibitions. But with the new Sony Building, we will work to design a piece of architecture that will be even more unprecedented than the original in terms being open and inviting to the public. Please look forward to what we have in store for you!
